Duke of Edinburgh
We have been offering the bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award (D of E) at St Oscar Romero’s for the last few years. So far a wide range of students have taken part and experienced something great. The D of E awards is an international personal development scheme for 14-24 year olds. It is adventurous and engaging, it requires you to go beyond yourself, try new things and reach new limits.
The D of E website says this about the award:
“Its balanced programme of activities develops the mind, body and soul in an environment of social interaction and team working”
The D of E programme is split into four sections at Bronze and Silver level they are:
- Volunteering: undertaking services to individuals or the community
- Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities
- Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests
- Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey.
Everyone who takes part develops as a person, some of the skills that will be developed include:
Team work, independence, problem solving, fitness, commitment, self worth, self esteem, responsibility, relationships, leadership, adventuring and many more….
The expedition is organised by the school and involves planning and taking part in a walking and camping weekend in the south downs.
