At St Oscar Romero Catholic Sixth Form our Post 18, UCAS and World Ready Programme is designed to ensure that students leave us prepared for the next step on their life journey, whether that is to higher education or employment. We aim to raise aspirations and promote social mobility ensuring that all students have access to the best opportunities possible.
All students will be provided with excellent quality, neutral information and qualified guidance to lay the foundations for their future. We aim to offer specialised advice concerning a number of pathways available to students after sixth form including University, apprenticeships, and employment.
The Sixth Form Post 18 World Ready programme provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to be life ready learners and achieve in the wider world. Below are some examples of what the programme includes:
UCAS Support
Students will be provided with comprehensive guidance and support, using both the expertise within the school and also use of external expertise in areas of greater specialism e.g. medicine, engineering. The pastoral programme will involve students collating evidence as they progress through their Sixth Form ready to submit a UCAS form that gives them the best chance of securing their first choice University.
A stable career programme
Throughout Year 12 and 13 all the students will have high quality career and employability experiences all evidenced through our very own CV and Personal Statement writing website, as well as a compelling and careers linked Work Experience placement in Year 12.
Learning from career and labour market information
This essential information will be on hand throughout the curriculum and subject teaching, Informing the students in support of their next steps. Students complete various Career/Skills pathway assessments helping them to match their individual pathways to what is happening in the world.
Addressing the needs of all pupils
The Personal Development support available will be ‘Personalised’ based around the GROWTH principle. Goals, Reality, Opportunities, Threats and Habits. Each student has their own journey, creating their own pathway.
Linking curriculum learning to careers
All Sixth Form teachers are directly connected to Industry and have a wealth of knowledge about subject and skills related pathways. Each subject area brings to life their subjects through their relevant real world connections.
Encounters with employers and employees
Throughout the students’ learning journey in Sixth Form there are key moments where students meet and work with professionals in different fields. Through A Level and BTEC studies and beyond there will be at least 10 quality encounters allowing the students to learn and develop beyond the curriculum.
Experience of workplaces
Alongside the Volunteering opportunities each Sixth form student will take on a Year 12 Work Placement that will enhance and develop their subject learning.
Encounters with higher education / Employment
Our Sixth Form will be directly linked to key Universities and Higher Level Apprenticeship and training providers in support of the students aspirations and positive outcomes. An example of this is our link with Brighton Medical School as part of our Romero’s Medics Programme and St John’s College, Oxford as part of the Inspire Scholar Scheme,
Personal guidance
At St Romeros we pride ourselves on encouraging our student’s individuality. The needs of each and every student is different and the guidance they are offered matches these variations. There are specific, key dates across the Pastoral Calendar where students have access to an external and impartial level 6 Careers advisor.
